Since December 22nd, the weather in the Channel Islands has been FOUL almost every day! Large swell, fog, and strong winds have either kept us from exploring where we want to look for Orcas, or caused trip cancellations entirely.
Thankfully a major change in the weather pattern is sliding in on New Years Eve. Sunny, calm weather is expected for the first several days of January. In response to this, we are operating trips every day Wednesday Jan 1st through Sunday January 5th.
The CA51 Killer Whale Pod was seen today, December 27th off Newport Beach swimming up the coast. I have high confidence they OR their extended family the CA51As will show again, probably in the Santa Barbara Channel sometime in the next week. Also, Monterey Bay had a pod of 60 Offshore Killer Whales yesterday December 26th. On December 29 and 31 last year, we also had dozens of Offshore Killer Whales in the Channel Islands. The seasonality is STRONG right now, just have to have some nice weather to work with and the sightings will start coming in.
